The Eagle's Nest

Termessos sits at roughly 1,000 metres on the slopes of Güllük Dağı, about 17 kilometres from Antalya, and its position is the whole story. When Alexander the Great surrounded the city in 333 BCE, he is said to have likened it to an eagle's nest — the terrain gave so much natural defensive advantage that even a small force could hold it. He withdrew rather than attack, and Termessos was never taken.

What survives today is unusually intact: a theatre with sweeping mountain views, an extensive necropolis of rock-cut and temple tombs, six identified temples, cisterns, an odeon, a gymnasium, an agora and a triumphal arch associated with Hadrian. Unlike more famous sites, Termessos has seen little restoration and is protected within Güllük Dağı-Termessos National Park — a genuinely wild ancient city, reached on foot through pine forest rather than by coach park.
