An Ancient City With the Clouds Below It
Sagalassos sits high in the Taurus Mountains above the village of Ağlasun, a city of ancient Pisidia that flourished under Rome before a series of earthquakes and a changing climate led to its slow abandonment. Excavations led by KU Leuven since the 1990s have uncovered an unusually complete city — theatre, baths, colonnaded street and the restored Antonine Nymphaeum, a monumental fountain with much of its original façade intact.
The altitude is part of the experience: at close to 1,500–1,600 metres, the site sits above much of the haze and heat of the coast, with views across the mountains that shift through the day. It also means Sagalassos sees a fraction of the visitors that arrive at Türkiye's coastal ruins, even in high season.
This is a site for travellers who want time to actually look — at the stonework, the setting and the scale of a Roman provincial city — rather than a brief photo stop on a multi-site itinerary.
Experience Highlights
- The Antonine Nymphaeum — A restored Roman monumental fountain with much of its original decorated façade in place.
- A Near-Complete Roman City — Theatre, baths, agora and colonnaded street, excavated and studied since the 1990s.
- A Genuinely High-Altitude Setting — Views across the Taurus range from close to 1,500–1,600 metres, unlike anywhere on the coast.
- Far From the Crowds — One of Türkiye's least visited major ancient sites, even in peak season.
- A Private, Unrushed Pace — Time to properly take in the stonework and setting, rather than a brief stop.
