What the Street Level Doesn't Show
Istanbul is usually read at street level — a mosque, a palace, a bazaar. Underneath it is a second city: Byzantine cisterns built to hold the water an imperial capital depended on, buried foundations, and substructures that later Ottoman builders reused rather than replaced. Constantinople did not vanish when the city changed hands in 1453; in large part, it was built over.
This private tour goes down rather than across — into the columned cisterns and lesser-known underground spaces of the historic peninsula, with a guide who can explain what each one supported, when it was built, and how it survived centuries of a city rebuilding itself directly on top of what came before.
It is best understood as a companion to Istanbul's famous skyline, not a replacement for it: the substructure that makes sense of what stands above.
Experience Highlights
- Byzantine Cisterns — Columned underground cisterns built to secure the water supply of an imperial capital, still standing centuries later.
- A City Built in Layers — Context for how Ottoman Istanbul was raised directly over Byzantine Constantinople, reusing rather than clearing what came before.
- Away From the Surface Crowds — These underground spaces see a fraction of the footfall of the landmarks above them.
- A Guide Who Reads the Layers — Historical context on construction, function and survival, not just a walk past columns.
- A Private Group — Just your own travelling party and your guide, with the pace and depth of detail set by you.
Your Private Itinerary
Your private journey may include:
- Meeting Point — Start from your hotel or a central meeting point on the historic peninsula.
- Into the First Cistern — Descend into a major Byzantine cistern, with context on why an imperial capital needed underground water storage at this scale.
- Reading the Layers — Above ground between sites, your guide points out where Ottoman construction sits directly on Byzantine foundations.
- A Quieter Underground Space — Visit a second, less-visited cistern or substructure, away from the main tourist circuit.
- Surfacing — Finish back at street level with the peninsula's landmarks recontextualised by what lies beneath them.
