A City Carved Into the Dark

Beneath the soft volcanic rock of Cappadocia lies Derinkuyu, an underground city that descends some 60 metres through at least eight levels — one of more than 200 such settlements known across the region, and by far the largest fully open to visitors. Carved gradually over centuries, it once sheltered thousands of people at once, complete with ventilation shafts, wells, stables, wine and oil presses, chapels and a network of narrow tunnels that could be sealed from within by massive rolling stone doors.

Derinkuyu is thought to have been used as a refuge in times of raid and religious persecution, most notably by early Christian communities hiding from Roman authorities and later from Arab raids during the Byzantine era. Its scale is still not fully understood — tunnels are believed to connect it to other underground cities in the region, including nearby Kaymaklı, though only a fraction of the full network has been excavated and opened.

This private journey descends through Derinkuyu's chambers and passageways at an unhurried pace, with a guide who can explain how — and why — an entire city was built to disappear beneath the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this suitable for people who are claustrophobic?

The main routes are reasonably spacious and well-lit, but the underground city does involve enclosed spaces and some low passages — let us know in advance if this is a concern and your guide can adjust the route.

How deep does the city go?

The open sections descend roughly 60 metres across at least eight levels, though the full extent of the city is believed to go further.

Is it cold underground?

Yes — the underground city maintains a cool, steady temperature year-round, so a light layer is worth bringing even in summer.

Can this be combined with a hot air balloon flight?

Yes — many guests pair an early-morning balloon flight with this afternoon descent for a full Cappadocia day; let us know and we can help arrange it.

How much does this experience cost?

Pricing depends on group size and whether the Ihlara Valley extension is included — send us your dates and we'll confirm private pricing.
