A City Built Into the Mountain, Rarely Visited
Arykanda sits on a steep mountainside above the Finike valley, its buildings arranged in terraces that follow the slope rather than a flat grid — theatre, stadium, baths and agora each set on their own level, connected by paths that climb through the site. It is one of the more dramatically positioned Lycian cities, and among the least visited.
Little is settled about the city's early history, and its name appears rarely in surviving ancient sources, which is part of why it is sometimes described as Lycia's forgotten city — not because it lacks importance, but because it has attracted far less attention and far fewer visitors than sites like Ephesus or Termessos.
For travellers who want an ancient site without a crowd, a gift shop or a coach park, Arykanda is one of the more genuine options on this coast — quiet, largely unrestored, and left much as excavation has found it.
Experience Highlights
- Terraced City on a Mountainside — Buildings arranged in levels up the slope, a distinctive layout among Lycian ruins.
- Genuinely Quiet — One of the least visited major sites on this coast, even in summer.
- Well-Preserved Stadium — A rare, largely intact ancient stadium built directly into the hillside.
- Largely Unrestored — Seen much as excavation left it, without heavy reconstruction.
- A Private Guide Who Fills the Gaps — Context for a site where the historical record itself is genuinely incomplete.

Designed Around You
The site involves genuine climbing across terraces, so pacing is built around your group's comfort with walking and heat. It pairs naturally with Sagalassos for travellers who want a fuller day of Anatolia's mountain archaeology, though each is also a complete private day on its own.
Private for 1–6 guests
Summer visits are best scheduled in the morning to avoid the strongest heat on the exposed terraces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Arykanda called "forgotten"?
Its early history is poorly documented in surviving sources, and it receives far fewer visitors than better-known Lycian sites — not because it lacks significance, but because it has attracted less attention.
Is there a lot of climbing?
Yes — the terraced layout means genuine uphill walking between levels. It's not suitable for anyone who needs level ground throughout.
Is there shade on site?
Limited — the terraces are largely open. A hat, water and sun protection are recommended, especially in summer.
Can this be combined with Sagalassos?
The two sites are not close together, so combining them typically means a longer, multi-day itinerary rather than a single day.
How much does this experience cost?
Pricing depends on group size and starting point — send us your dates and we'll confirm private pricing.
